Speak Japanese! is part of the Speak Languages! series of websites, which aims to provide high quality learning materials for anybody who wishes to teach themself a foreign language.

Over 130 million people speak Japanese, most of whom live in Japan, with some in emigrant communities worldwide. Japanese is the official language of Japan.
It is a matter of debate whether it is related to any other known language, although the writing system has used Chinese ideographic characters, kanji, for almost 2000 years, supplemented by two types of syllabic characters, hiragana and katakana, both of which were developed from kanji.
